The Enterobacteriaceae family are gram-negative bacteria, including pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Cronobacter, and Shigella, many of which are involved in food contamination recalls. Since 2005, laws requiring testing powdered infant formula for Cronobacter also recommend screening for Enterobacteriaceae as a hygiene indicator.
